Since moving to San Francisco Feb 1st of this year, it's been enjoyable learning the different areas of The City. It's incredibly beautiful and enough of a big little city for me. The colorful homes, beautiful architecture, hustle and bustle, restaurants of all ethnicities plus the beauty of the bay and the ocean makes it difficult to want to live any where else.

History. Prior to the 1850s, Nob Hill was called California Hill (after California Street, which climbs its steep eastern face), but was renamed after the Central Pacific Railroad's Big Four – known as the Nobs – who built their mansions on the hill.

Though not used as much today, nabob is a word used to denote people of great wealth and/or status. With the Big 4 and some other members of San Francisco elite living in huge mansions on California Hill, locals took to calling it Nabob Hill, which was quickly shortened to Nob Hill.
